Commercial Solar Panel FAQs
How long does it take to install commercial solar panels?
For a typical business, we would require less than a week to install without any interruption to the electrical supply or the company’s day-to-day running. This would depend on the roof’s nature, the system size required and the weather.
How much energy can commercial solar panels generate?
The amount of power generated depends on various factors, such as the orientation, location, and size of the roof. To design a system that best suits your business, we would analyse your annual electricity usage (half-hourly data). We would use satellite imaging and structural data to calculate the number of panels required and give you a tailored report on our recommendations.
How long will a commercial solar panel system last, and will the performance drop over time?
Igen only installs tier 1 high-quality panels with a 25-year warranty on performance. Panel degradation is factored into our analysis and forecast report. Panels will retain at least 85% of nominal power after 25 years.
Will I need to inform my current energy supply about the planned commercial solar panel installation?
As part of our service, Igen submit a full G99 application and schematic to the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) on your behalf to get approval to connect to the grid. It is important to note that this can take up to 2 months.
Does the Igen solar panel system require regular maintenance?
We only specify and install tier-1 equipment from reputable manufacturers who provide warranties for their products. However, we also offer service and maintenance packages to all our clients to ensure the system works optimally.
Will I need planning permission for my commercial solar panels?
Although solar is usually allowed under permitted development, we will apply for a lawful development certificate to ensure you comply with all local and national planning requirements.
How are the commercial solar panels fixed to the roof, and will they cause any damage?
iGen will fully appraise your roof structure, including wind and snow loadings, with a proposed PV system in place. It will also design a system that will maintain the integrity and lifespan of your roof.
How can I tell if my commercial solar panels are performing?
iGen will provide a complete system forecast with exact roof details and local meteorological data using the latest modelling software developed by the European Commission’s joint research centre. Once the system is up and running, it will be monitored remotely, with live and historical data easily accessed through your laptop or mobile device. If the system performance falls outside set parameters, iGen and our clients will be alerted, and we will carry out any necessary work.
What does an inverter do?
Inverters convert the DC current from the panels to the AC current needed by your business and the grid. It’s essential to use the correct type of inverter and locate it in the right place.
Do I need a South-facing roof?
No, Solar PV panels work on light, and all roofs have light shining on them. Many customers have fitted east/west-facing systems, which typically generate around 86% of an equivalent south-facing roof.
What happens if my PV Solar Panels are producing more than I’m using?
The excess energy will be sold back to the grid.
