Igen were commissioned by Marshall Construction to design and install a 999 kWp solar PV system at XDock 549 in Widnes. The facility is a new build, high-spec logistics hub targeting an EPC A rating and a BREEAM “Excellent” certification, and the solar installation forms a core element of its sustainability credentials.

The Challenge

With development of XDock 549 aimed at the highest standards of environmental performance, the requirement was to embed significant renewable energy generation into the building from day one. Rising energy costs and regulatory pressure on carbon reduction meant the brief was clear: deliver a rooftop solar PV solution that integrates seamlessly with the building structure and timeline, supports the EPC and BREEAM targets, and offsets a substantial portion of the site’s electrical demand. Coordination with building design, construction sequencing and other services was essential to avoid disruption and ensure full alignment with the wider project deliverables.

The Solution

Igen’s in-house engineering team engineered a system sized at 999 kWp, specifying high-efficiency solar modules and inverters tailored to the roof geometry, orientation and expected energy profile of the logistics facility. The installation was synchronised with the building’s construction programme handled by Marshall Construction, enabling minimal interference with other trades, and ensuring testing, commissioning and handover aligned with occupancy timelines. To support the rich specification of the building (EPC A and BREEAM Excellent), the solar PV system became a key sustainability driver—providing meaningful generation from day one and supporting the building’s long-term operational efficiency.

The Results

  • Total system capacity: 999 kWp

  • Generation: designed to significantly reduce grid electricity dependency and lower operational costs for occupiers

  • Integration: system sized and located to work harmoniously with the building’s structure, orientation and loading dock design

  • Sustainability credentials: strengthens the building’s case for EPC A rating and BREEAM Excellent certification by supplying on-site renewable energy

The solar array demonstrates Igen’s capability in delivering large-scale, high-performance renewable systems in new build environments, and provides the facility with a substantial environmental and cost-saving benefit from day one.

The Impact

For XDock 549, the installation embodies the client’s commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency and long-term resilience. The facility is now well-positioned to attract occupiers keen to align with net zero ambitions, reduced energy costs and high-performing infrastructure. For Igen, this project emphasises our strength in collaborating with major contractors on high-specification projects and showcases how solar PV can be incorporated as a standard part of new-build logistics infrastructure, rather than as an afterthought.

Mike Travis, Project Manager, A.F Connell

“Igen were a pleasure to work with on the XDock 549 project. From the early design stages through to installation and commissioning, their team demonstrated exceptional professionalism and technical expertise. They coordinated seamlessly with Marshall Construction and the wider project team, ensuring the 999 kWp solar PV system was delivered safely, on programme, and to an excellent standard. The result is a high-performing renewable energy system that supports the building’s BREEAM Excellent and EPC A ambitions — a real credit to Igen’s capability and commitment to quality.”
