Igen Energy was appointed by M&O Contractors to design and install a 242 kWp rooftop solar PV system at National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) Exeter. The project supports NGED’s ongoing commitment to decarbonisation and operational efficiency, delivering on-site renewable energy to reduce grid dependency and long-term energy costs. Installed within a live operational environment, the system demonstrates how solar PV can be effectively integrated into critical infrastructure while maintaining high safety, quality, and performance standards.
The Challenge
As part of National Grid’s wider sustainability strategy, the Exeter site required a reliable and efficient solar PV solution capable of delivering meaningful carbon reduction without disrupting daily operations. The challenge was to design and install a system that could be safely delivered within an active electrical distribution facility, while coordinating closely with the principal contractor’s programme and site constraints. Careful planning was essential to manage access, working-at-height requirements, and interface with existing building services, ensuring compliance with NGED’s stringent safety and operational standards.
The Solution
Igen’s in-house engineering team designed a 242 kWp solar PV system, comprising 480 high-performance Trina Vertex solar panels, paired with Solis inverters to provide efficient and dependable power conversion. A K2 mounting system was specified to ensure secure roof integration, long-term durability, and full compatibility with the existing roof structure. Working on behalf of M&O Contractors, Igen coordinated closely with site management to deliver the installation safely and efficiently within a live environment. The project was carefully phased to minimise disruption, with installation, testing, and commissioning completed in line with programme requirements and NGED operational protocols.
The Results
-
Total installed capacity: 242 kWp
-
Modules installed: 480 × Vertex solar panels
-
Inverters: Solis
-
Mounting system: K2
-
Operational outcome: On-site renewable generation reducing grid electricity consumption and supporting long-term cost savings
The completed system provides NGED Exeter with a robust and efficient renewable energy asset, delivering immediate environmental and operational benefits.
The Impact
For NGED Exeter, the solar PV installation contributes directly to carbon reduction targets and strengthens the site’s sustainability performance, while maintaining the reliability expected of critical national infrastructure. For Igen Energy, the project reinforces our expertise in delivering solar PV systems within live, operational environments and highlights our ability to work collaboratively with principal contractors such as M&O Contractors to deliver high-quality renewable energy solutions for utility and infrastructure clients.
Sam Smith, Senior Contracts Manager M&O Contractors
“Working with Igen Energy on the NGED Exeter solar PV project was an outstanding experience. Their team demonstrated exceptional professionalism, technical expertise, and attention to detail throughout the entire installation. Despite the complexities of working within a live operational facility, Igen delivered the system safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards. The result is a high-performance renewable energy asset that aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals and operational requirements. I would have no hesitation in recommending Igen for future renewable energy projects.”
