The AJ Bell Stadium—home to the Salford Red Devils and Sale Sharks—serves as a major venue for sport, events, and conferences across the North West. As part of its commitment to improving sustainability across its estate, Peel Holdings appointed Igen to design and deliver a 250 kWp solar PV system on the stadium’s south stand roof. This installation supports ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption and enhance the stadium’s environmental performance.

The Challenge

The AJ Bell Stadium required a high-capacity solar solution capable of integrating with an existing steel roof structure while accommodating the complex operational demands of a live sports venue.  The system needed to be installed on a trapezoidal Kingspan roof, requiring a lightweight fixing method to avoid adding unnecessary load. Additionally, the electrical integration demanded precision planning: the PV system needed to be connected to the existing LV panel during a strictly controlled overnight shutdown window, ensuring zero disruption to stadium operations or event schedules.

The Solution

Igen engineered a system comprising 1,896 solar panels delivering a total capacity of 250 kWp. The panels were installed using a lightweight mini-rail mounting system, providing secure attachment to the trapezoidal Kingspan steel roof while maintaining structural efficiency.  The system included nine inverters, all integrated through a dedicated PV Distribution Board fitted with a G59 relay to ensure grid compliance and safe operation. Final electrical connection to the client’s LV panel required combining two existing ways during a time-critical overnight shutdown. Working between 12:00am and 5:30am, the team completed the integration safely and without disruption to stadium activities.

The Results

  • Total system capacity: 250 kWp

  • Panels installed: 1,896

  • Inverters: 9

  • Mounting system: Lightweight mini-rail on trapezoidal Kingspan roof

  • Outcome: A high-performance, low-impact solar installation supporting stadium energy efficiency

The system now generates significant volumes of renewable electricity, reducing operational carbon emissions and supporting the stadium’s commitment to sustainable operations.

Scott Lally, Construction Manager, Peel Holdings

“Igen delivered this project with exceptional professionalism from start to finish. Their ability to work around the operational demands of the stadium, particularly during the overnight shutdown, was outstanding. The quality of the installation and their attention to detail have given us complete confidence in the long-term performance of the system.”
